5th July 2008

Dear RCMICians,

Its July 1st & technically the Presidentship of the club has changed hands. Pollu Suresh promptly called me to remind me(he made it sound congratulatory) that the moment of truth has arrived.

But unlike other Presidents who were the only ones to feel nervous as the D day arrived, I sense the whole club getting a bit jittery in my case. Let me not state the obvious on why this strange phenomenon is occurring. Sometimes it pays to have a “Vellaiyattu Pillai” reputation

Suresh has taken the club to new heights, building on solid clubservice projects, family meets & outstation trips. This has made RCMIC into a close knit family. Then he unleashed the activities on service projects, ongoing as well new innovative ones. My favorite was the Fun Bus trip to VGP with Guild of Service kids. Thank you Suresh & his team for doing a great job in 2007-08.

The great traditions of our club makes the job very easy on any President. The Club has matured so beautifully that projects/activities start gathering speed immediately after it is cranked up. Each one knows his responsibility & delivers what is expected, on time. A classic example is the activities for the Installation. After the initial planning meeting, Rotarians & Anns went about accomplishing the tasks they taken up in a thoroughly professional manner. The orchestra will be play together at Marina Towers on 6th July & it will be interesting to hear the outcome.

The future also looks good. Implementation of the Club Leadership Plan (CLP) will ensure that the Club does not wildly fluctuate in its performance in the years to come & maintains a straight-line growth.

Some of our Rotarians who were preoccupied with their profession last year have expressed interest in taking up responsibilities this year. This augurs well for the growth of our club.

Many of our members have invited their friends in the last few meetings. The Membership Development team is working on revised modalities to be followed for New member induction as per CLP. This is going to be the lifeline of our club.

Net Net I’m happy to take-up the Presidentship when everything looks upbeat & happy. I’m grateful to the previous teams & present members for this. I’m sure Rtn Subu(President elect) will be in a better platform when he starts off next year…..we have 365days to build that platform. I’m sure we will do a good job of it

Happy Rotary Year & May God Bless our Club

Dear RCMICians,

There are a few interesting initiatives by RI which is worth looking into by us for streamlining the activities of the club. One of them being "Club Leadership plan".(CLP) For a short sighted Rotarian like me it meant identifying the President Elect & President Nominee. Infact during our GV one of the Dist officials enquired if we have implemented the CLP...not to be exposed on my lack of knowledge I floated my head in random directions ala Tanjore Bommai ....conveying neutrality in my thoughts....which was readily accepted by him. He also, for some reason, did not want to get into details I think :-))

OK...coming back to CLP.....its about planning club's activities over a period of time (3 years typically)on a broad canvas based on its aspirations. For example we can plan on what our membership strength should be in the next 2 years. We can plan on what should be the Gender Mix....we can plan on the content of our Monthly Eye camps...we can plan the road map for using www.rcmic.org...  etc etc. The advantage of doing this is the whole club is involved in the process & it will make the life of future Presidents that much easier.

Secy elect who was amused by my sudden serious lecture on such RI matters suggested that its time to draft the CFP (Club Fellowship..) & pulled me to the nearest water hole...overheard someone singing "subko malum hai main sharabee nahin phir bi koyi ...."

Check out some new content on the website which includes a gist of the amazing work Suresh & Co did this year in the Service Projects section...the Meeting Notes is a new addition...so is "About Rotary"

...new photos uploaded by Prasad...Calendar Updates ..so on & so forth

Club Leadership Plan (CLP) 8th June 2008

Thought for Food (Content Vasanth Bhavan) was followed by Food for thought (Content CLP)

A historic decision was taken on a bright sunday morning (not quite ala a cold winter Chicago evening in 1905....yeah yeah we know what it is..). RCMIC decided to be one of the first clubs in the District (Hope no one checks) to embrace CLP in its Club's framework..cl(a)p cl(a)p. The following ACTION points were taken (Yaar angae..Call Action King Arjun...if not Arjun's Dad to be the President)

  1. RCMIC felt the recommendations in the CLP (made after years of research by RI) are reasonable & can be adapted by RCMIC with minor modifications this year for its growth.
  2. Ram to send a proposed organisation chart with responsibilities before 10th June
  3. Chairman of all commitees are expected to continue for 3 years in the position. Incase of change a person within the commitee to be nominated
  4. The Commitee to meet once before the Club Assembly on 27th June & propose the Budget, Plans, recomendations to change in the By law etc as per RI guidelines. Commitee mtgs can also double up as family get togethers.
  5. All members must be involved in atleast one of the commitees.
  6. Detailed implementation plan to be ready before the installation on 6th July. Action King..oops Arjun's Dad to ensure this.

Summer Bash by the Pool side - hosted by the Anands

To beat the summer heat, the Rotarians got a welcome invitation from Meenakshi and Anand for dinner, on the 16th of May 2008 , at the Presidency Club. It was arranged by the Poolside.

The evening began with a number of fun games for the children, who oblivious of the heat, were having a great time. To keep the adults on their toes, a few games livened up the evening and all the winners were rewarded with interesting prizes.

There was good fellowship, as usual, with a lot of laughter and pleasantry and it was a welcome sight to see not less than 1/2 a dozen guests, possibly future Rotarians for our club.

The evening was complete with a delicious spread of snacks and dinner.

Despite the uncomfortable humidity, it was a welcome sight to see excellent attendance of Rotarians, Annes and Annettes and also the guests---future Rotarians. This bespeaks the wonderful and warm hospitality of Meena and Anand.

On behalf of the RCMIC, I extend my thanks to Meena and Anand .

Maheshwari Mohan addresses the club on May 4th

Despite Chennai’s sweltering heat & the poor member turn out, the Rotary meet on

Sunday 4th  May  was memorable for one reason –   Ann Maheshwari’s  reviting

Speech on Patents & Trademarks.

For those enlightened soul like myself who thought trademarks are akin to pulimark

(a brand of beedis) the speech was truly a revelation !  While a few people in the back

row decided to catch up on the sleep they missed the previous night, Maheshwari

handled the posers from all members with poise.

Ram as always, was quick to provide the laughter breaks when required.  And boy ! it’s

so much fun to watch all the men moot yet another  trip to aaliyar only to have the women

Vociferously veto it out.

The pleasing ambience of the rotary office is commendable and President Suresh urged

all  members to make use of the space for their rotary activities. To those of you who think

rotary is a strange thing to be doing early sunday morning, I  would suggest you to take

the risk & like me may be you’ II  be pleasantly surprised !!.

28/04/08...Well! We had 10 members assembled on a sleepy Sunday morning at the News trust. www.rcmic.org was intruduced to the members & it started a lively discussion on what we could accomplish with this tool. Everyone present agreed that this was a great tool to improve traction within the club & exchange information. It was suggested that we have multiple members managing several pages of the website.  Ram to give a proposal & inform the members to participate actively in this endeveour.

Happy website creating!
