SANCTUARY

Cancer support group

(A project of Rotary Club of Madras Industrial City)

 

Sanctuary is a support group whose aim is to demystify cancer and empower patients to participate in their care and treatment and healing.

 

At Sanctuary, patients and their families meet others going through experiences similar to theirs. They can meet individually or in group sessions, to share the emotional burden, lessen the trauma and be better equipped- mentally, emotionally, psychologically- to fight the invisible enemy.

 

All support services of Sanctuary are provided  at no cost and without referral.

 

Sanctuary’,s  KIDS CAN  is an ongoing programme for children with cancer. This programmes encourages children shut out to the rest of the world for prolonged periods to come out of their shell and begin to feel loved and cared for.

 

Sanctuary has its presence at the Adayar Cancer Institute (WIA), where its volunteers are available to guide cancer patients and their families through the regime of diagnosis and treatment.

 ACTIVITIES

 

Ongoing projects  at the Adyar Cancer Institute:

 

v   Individual counseling from Monday to Friday.

 

v   Special educator to teach the children at the paediatric ward.

 

v   Bhajan classes for children every Thursday.

 

v   Film shows  once every two months.

 

v   Help on call- Telephonic Helpline service for cancer patients and their family members.

 

v   Training and re-orientation programmes for volunteers engaged in cancer support activities.

 

Awareness programmes:

 

v   Cancer awareness programmes conducted regularly to create awareness among general public,  especially women.

 

v   Anti smoking campaigns for high school students to discourage them from taking up smoking.

 

Other activities:

 

v   Provision of various facilities to the in-patients of the Institute

v   Celebration of various festivals ,  new year, independence day etc

v   Improvement of the hospital facilities like toilets renovation of wards, toilets etc.
