Our regular weekly meeting was held on 29.01.2010 at Hotel Radha Regent. We had Sir Ken Robinson, a noted educationalist and mush sought after resource person in England, who spoken online on the subject “Do Schools Kill Creativity”.  The moderator was Rtn. Krishna Sai, President of RC Chennai Sun City.  Sir Ken Robinson takes an entirely different view on education in the present day scenario.  He says that creativity in education is as important as literacy.  The present day educational system is tuned to the needs of industrial revolution the world witnessed during the 19th century.  He opines that intelligence is dynamic and interactive.  He explained with a real life example of a girl student who seemingly had a learning disorder. She as later encouraged in her chosen field of interest and how she later made news worldwide as a gifted dance and choreographer.

In the coming years Sir Ken Robinson feels University degrees are not worth anything.  Creativity in children must be nurtured and encouraged.

Weekly Meeting on 22-01-2010

Our weekly meeting on 22.01.2010 had an interesting topic. The topic was “Astrology

in Everyday Life”.  The speaker was Rtn. Dilip Kumar, President of RC East, R.A. Puram,

Chennai.  Earlier the gathering was welcomed by our President Subbu and following

this the speaker was introduced by PP Suresh Kumar.

The speaker gave a general talk about  astrology. He said that astrological calculations

are made based on the lunar calendar of 28 days month. Contrary to popular belief

Amavasya (new moon day) is not an auspicious day. statistical studies have proved that

the rate of crime is more on a new moon day than other days.  7 planets are used in

astrology coinciding with 7 days of a week.  The fact that sun is the centre of our solar

system have been found by our astronomers ages ago and astronomy is a well developed

science in our country. He explained the importance of birth star (Jenma Nakshtra) and

the evil effects of 7 ½ years of Saturn Astrology has been practiced for centuries in our

country. That the topic was interesting was found during the interactive session after the

speech. The meet was well attended by our Rotarians and Anns.
